Sound Desensitization

A technique called sound desensitization works wonders with dogs who are afraid of loud, startling, or uncommon noises. Play a CD of select loud noises once daily for a few weeks while playing with your dog. He should become desensitized to the sound.

You can order desensitization CDs from dogwise.com. I purchased Sound Socialization [$30] by O'Neal Hendrix. It has lots of other sounds on it as well, including sirens, infants crying, children playing and screaming, traffic, tools—and even the groomer.

Begin by playing the CD quietly, gradually increasing the volume each day until normal. At the same time the CD is on, play a fun game with your dog. This will associate the new sounds with a pleasurable experience. Make sure the game is fun and upbeat. Rewards with treats are additional positive reinforcements.

Pacing is critical. Increasing the volume too quickly—before your dog begins to behave calmly while the CD is playing on low—will cause a relapse. If he becomes anxious as you increase the volume, slow down the pace.

It should take three to four weeks to desensitize your dog, so start now if you want to be ready for the 4th of July fireworks. Be sure to read our article specific to the July 4 fireworks.
