Planning for the Unexpected

Planning for the Unexpected

I'm not one of those who have an emergency plan - if the Zombie Apocalypse happens, I'm in trouble. However, I recently put together a file to address how to take care of my dogs in an emergency. Each of my breeding dogs was micro-chipped as a puppy, and a file in the house contains their microchip number, AKC papers, and all health records. All of those things are important if someone needs to place them in new homes. Until now, I'd never made a plan for a temporary emergency. During a bit of downtime, I typed an instruction sheet that includes:

  • the brand of food they eat and the amount

  • my vet's name in case of an emergency

  • any ongoing food sensitivities or medical issues that need attention

  • who to contact for temporary placement should the need arise

  • where to find their individual health information

  • You may want to include habits, quirks, best friends, and dog sitters. Do they like children and other animals?

  • Make the information easy to find.
